Rogue Snail’s Relik Hunters Legenda has successfully completed its crowdfunding run on Kickstarter. The Brazilian developers managed to accrue $55,185 during the funding drive, and now the work gets underway to finish off the core game design and prep for the eventual September, 2018 release next year.

The game’s main hook is that it’s a online cooperative, four-player action-shooter game. Four friends go on an intergalactic adventure through time travel and space faring, collecting loot, unlocking new weapons, and advancing the story.

I was expecting it to be a rogue-lite with a procedurally generated story, but it’s actually a game with a dedicated narrative centered around a variety of wacky exploits that unfold through a dialogue-centric storyboard.

Even though there’s an actual story to uncover, the levels themselves are procedurally generated, featuring pitfalls to jump over, monsters to shoot, and various types of loot to collect, almost like an eight-direction version of Borderlands, but without the Gearbox-laden memes or a president of the company who has an obsession with #GamerGate.

The art is unique, taking a lot of flavors from Brazilian culture and themes, with the characters and style mimicking a Flash-based Saturday morning cartoon, which is no surprise given that the developers have plans on branching out into comic books and animated features down the line.

The Early Access version of the game will be available during the latter half of 2018, but Rogue Snail has plans on turning the game into a free-to-play venture in 2019. I don’t know if that will be the wisest decision but a lot of it depends on how the game comes together in 2018 and how playable it is at that point.

As far as the concept is concerned, it looks like a beat-’em-up version of Gunstar Heroes with a splash of Brazilian culture sprinkled on top.
